CO2Renu – The Craghoppers Fleece Part Made with Carbon Emissions.

We know that you our readers love sustainability, so do we. This is an incredible innovation, an amazing industry first and an ideal insulator for adventurers who want to make sure that even the clothes they choose are working to preserve the beauty of their favourite places on earth.

Leading global adventure travel brand, Craghoppers adds to its sustainable story with CO2Renu joining their range for AW23 as an innovative way of recycling waste CO2 into a product. A world first for the outdoor industry, CO2Renu has been created in collaboration with industry experts, LanzaTech and is helping reduce the carbon footprint of the manufacturing process.

CO2Renu reshapes carbon waste by using CO2 emissions as the starting point to create some of Craghoppers recycled polyester blends. The 4-piece collection features a full and half zip fleece for men and women in a variety of colourways including blue navy, black pepper, red and ecru.

The women’s style comes in a relaxed fit with a dropped shoulder and for men, a more active cut is present, both oozing timeless design. The science behind making a CO2Renu fleece is quite complex but it can be explained in three simple steps:

  • CO2 waste is captured from manufacturing factories such as steel mills.

  • The captured CO2 is then fermented (in a process much like making beer) into liquid ethanol.

  • The liquid ethanol is then polymerised into fibres, which becomes some of the polyester fibres that will be a part of your new CO2Renu fleece.

Craghoppers is keen to ensure that sustainability is a key focus in every step of the manufacturing process. With that in mind, the CO2Renu Jacket and Half Zip were designed and developed in 3D design programme, CLO.  Craghoppers’ Product Team chose to use CLO because it reduces the need for prototypes, therefore reducing waste.

“We are really excited to be working in collaboration with Industry experts to incorporate innovative fabrics on our sustainable sourcing journey.” Katie Cotterill, Senior Buyer Manager on Craghoppers’ Product Team says. “As a technical outdoor brand, polyester is one of our most commonly used fibres. To be able to incorporate LanzaTech's groundbreaking technology into our fabrics mean that we are able to take the first step on our journey to using next generation recycled fibres that don’t rely on recycled bottles.”

The CO2Renu Collection is available online and in-store now.
