5 Mins With: Fred Horny.
Adventurer, mountain biker, skier and explorer. Fred has been doing cool stuff adventurewise for years. Originally from North-East of France, Alsace, then after living in Germany and Canada, he’s been a local in Bourg Saint Maurice / Les Arcs since 2013 . Here in our chat, Fred talks about his Vojo Mag project, favourite trails and some impressive upcoming projects..
We know you visit Morzine and Les Gets often, what's your favourite mtb trail here ?
My fave trails out there are definitely Joranloup and La chapelle de Jacquicourt. I am really looking forward to visiting again with my mates Maël, Lilou and Siméon to enjoy rides together in July and then with the Lapierre Mavic Unity team in September for the World Cup.
What's new in your world. Tell us about the projects you are working on at the moment:
Still continuing my webseries with Vojo Mag, The Ride Next Door : Take the train from a big city, and after maximum 45 min, ride the best trails around !! See it here on Vojo mag: Vojomag Ride Next Door Lille
“The concept of the Ride Next Door does not change: a big city, a day and no car. It's up to us to find the trails with pedal strokes or using only public transport. In front of the camera, we always find Fred Horny, the adventurer on his Lapierre Zesty, with Paul from the Vojo team”
Any new projects?
Big project of the year : Our new movie with Jérémie Reuiller & Luc Grégoire . Our last one, Kanymda Kumiss, about Kirghizistan, made over 80 projections worldwide and got 10 awards . The next one was started in January, about a societal topic ( Story written in collaboration with Arte TV). Last part will be filmed this summer in South America . Culture, History, landscapes & mates : Mountain biking is just a pretext to meet new people. Another plan for sure is to explore even more my new 2nd home : Green Cape ! In November. In the future I also want to continue to explore Africa, as I did already Ethiopia, Rwanda & Uganda, I would carry out to the West & spend as much time as possible with locals . Simple but essential. I’d also like to go back to Népal with my mate Richard & my girlfriend Léa.
Must have equipment for the winter and summer?
My Jetboil + my 170 mm travel Lapierre Spicy bike to ride whatever the terrain and conditions .
DH and Enduro Racing. Any changes you think need to be made on the world scene?
It feels damn good to see DH back at the top of the game, that's awesome ! Feels like it becomes even harder and harder to live through this sport if your parents aren't rich though. Not meaning the top ones are necessarily coming from rich families, but if you don't have a solid club or association to support you from the beginning, it looks pretty much impossible to get to the hotspot. I think Enduro lost its essence a few years ago : This discipline was all about racing blind, not training & training on shorter stages and chase the millisecond. The racers are incredibly fast these days, but I lost interest for Enduro to be honest . Let's see how they manage the future of the discipline in the coming years, sure they can make a bright future again !! #JérômeClémentzforever
